Giving a voice (to the hairdryer)
2024. Stoneware, hairdryer, sound recording.We are in a dominant position to our technologies, which are considered tools and thus perpetually secondary. In addition to giving the tools orders, we also decide which ones shall have their voices. A washing machine plays a song when a wash cycle is over, because we designed and manufactured it to do so. The conversation between a person and a tool is only possible when the person agrees to it, no matter how technologically advanced the tool is.
A blow dryer (or hair dryer) is a comforting household item to those with long hair. The reason is sometimes beyond the intended function of drying the hair. Some people claim to sleep with their blow dryers turned on, saying that the white noise and warm wind guarantee a good night’s sleep. For myself, I enjoy the ritual of blow drying my hair after a late-night shower. The buzzing sound is often the last thing I hear before sleep.
A new channel of communication is opened as I sat down and co-played a song with my blow dryer. This time it wasn’t turned on to dry anything, but to compose music.
